PRODUCT CARE
Leather lasts longer when it is cared for like leather.
Different leathers need different care. Use the guide below to identify the leather in your Royal Star Leather piece, then follow the appropriate routine cleaning, deep cleaning, and preservation instructions.
If your product page includes care instructions that differ from this general guide, follow the product-specific instructions.
BEFORE YOU CLEAN
A few rules apply to nearly everything.
Do not soak it
Leather should be cleaned with controlled moisture rather than submerged or saturated.
Let it dry naturally
Air dry away from heaters, hair dryers, radiators, or prolonged direct sunlight.
Test products first
Cleaners and conditioners can change color or finish. Test them in an inconspicuous area before treating the whole piece.
More is not better
Over-cleaning and over-conditioning can soften structural leather, darken color, or change the surface finish.
Avoid household cleaners, bleach, alcohol, disinfectant wipes, harsh detergents, and machine washing unless a product-specific instruction explicitly says otherwise.
LEATHER CARE GUIDE
Match the care to the leather.
Use the sections below as a general care reference for the leather types used in Royal Star Leather products.
English Bridle Leather
Water / Sweat
Wipe the leather with a clean, soft cloth after use. For sweat or light residue, use a slightly damp cloth, then allow the leather to air dry completely.
Deep Cleaning
Use a leather cleaner suitable for finished vegetable-tanned or bridle leather. Apply sparingly with a soft cloth and remove excess product rather than saturating the leather.
Conditioning / Preservation
Condition lightly only when the leather begins to feel dry. Bridle leather already contains oils and waxes, so frequent heavy oiling is unnecessary and can soften or darken the piece.
Harness Leather
Water / Sweat
Wipe away sweat, moisture, and surface residue with a soft cloth. Use a slightly damp cloth when needed and allow the piece to dry naturally.
Deep Cleaning
Use a cleaner intended for smooth finished leather. Work in small areas and avoid stripping the waxes and oils already present in the leather.
Conditioning / Preservation
Harness leather is typically already heavily conditioned. Apply additional conditioner or oil sparingly and only when the leather actually feels dry.
Split Buck
Water / Sweat
Blot moisture rather than rubbing aggressively. Allow the leather to air dry fully before storing the piece.
Deep Cleaning
Use a cleaner intended for soft split, suede-like, or napped leather. Clean gently and avoid saturating the lining.
Conditioning / Preservation
Avoid heavy oils, waxes, and greasy conditioners unless specifically intended for this leather. They can darken the surface, flatten the nap, and change the feel.
Suede
Water / Sweat
Blot moisture gently and allow the suede to dry naturally. Once dry, use a suede brush to restore the nap if needed.
Deep Cleaning
Use a cleaner specifically intended for suede. Work lightly and avoid flooding the surface with water or cleaner.
Conditioning / Preservation
Do not use standard leather oils, creams, or waxes on the suede surface. Use products designed specifically for suede if protection or restoration is needed.
Chrome-Tanned Leather
Water / Sweat
Wipe the leather with a soft cloth after wear. Use a slightly damp cloth for light sweat or residue and allow it to dry naturally.
Deep Cleaning
Use a mild cleaner intended for finished leather. Because chrome-tanned finishes vary, test any cleaner before treating the entire piece.
Conditioning / Preservation
Use a light leather conditioner compatible with the surface finish. Avoid saturating softer chrome-tanned leather with heavy oils.
Nubuck
Water / Sweat
Blot moisture gently and let the leather dry naturally. Brush the surface afterward with a nubuck or suede brush to restore the texture.
Deep Cleaning
Use a cleaner specifically intended for nubuck or suede. Avoid aggressive rubbing and do not soak the leather.
Conditioning / Preservation
Avoid standard oils and waxes, which can permanently darken or flatten the buffed surface. Use nubuck-specific protection products where appropriate.
Pull-Up Leather
Water / Sweat
Wipe away moisture and sweat with a soft cloth and allow the leather to air dry. Light marks may often blend back into the surface as the oils move through the leather.
Deep Cleaning
Clean sparingly with a product suitable for waxy or oily leather. Heavy cleaning can strip the character and pull-up effect from the surface.
Conditioning / Preservation
Pull-up leather already contains substantial oils and waxes. Condition only when it begins to feel dry, and use a product compatible with pull-up or waxy leather.
HARDWARE & STITCHING
The leather is not the only part that needs care.
Hardware
Wipe buckles, D-rings, snaps, and other hardware dry after exposure to sweat or moisture. Avoid leaving salts or moisture sitting on plated finishes for extended periods.
Do not aggressively polish plated hardware unless the product used is appropriate for that finish. Some metal polishes can remove or damage plating.
Stitching
Keep stitching free of heavy buildup from conditioner, wax, dirt, and residue. When cleaning around seams, use a soft cloth or soft brush rather than scraping or picking at the thread.
If stitching becomes cut, loose, or visibly damaged, stop using the affected attachment point until the piece can be inspected or repaired.
DRYING & STORAGE
Let the piece rest before you put it away.
After cleaning or heavy wear, allow the piece to dry completely before storing it. Store leather in a cool, dry location with airflow rather than sealing damp gear in plastic or an airtight container.
- Keep leather away from prolonged direct sunlight and excessive heat.
- Do not store leather while it is damp from sweat or cleaning.
- Avoid crushing shaped pieces under heavy objects.
- Allow straps, cuffs, and shaped panels to rest in a natural position when practical.
- Inspect frequently used pieces periodically for wear around stitching, hardware, and attachment points.
WHEN IN DOUBT
Ask before experimenting.
If you are unsure which leather your piece uses or whether a cleaner, conditioner, or treatment is appropriate, contact Royal Star Leather before applying it.
